 I've applied a slight variant to Dean's patch: I only catch ValueErrors
 with the exception handler. I'll attach v-30 for testing and if it seems
 to be OK, I'll post it to ALSO.

 (Sorry it took me so long to get back to this... too many other
 distractions of late.)
