Comment:

 I had not released that the spiral had already been committed on mainline,
 so the first patch is a bit more complicated than I had anticipated
 because it undoes the spiral changes rather than just add the layout
 enhancements to the basic ring.

 Both patches have been tested, applied sequentially.
