Comment(by walter):

 Another approach would be to have all of the utility methods return
 xocolor objects instead of strings. This would require an API change for
 get_random_color that would need to be propagated to the initialization
 dialog and perhaps other places as well. Somewhat outside of the context
 of this ticket, but I am willing to make the change if people think it
 will make the code more robust/easier to maintain.
