Comment(by overbyte):

 I have the same problem now in a new situation. I have installed Ubuntu
 (xfce4 as window manager) 8.10, the distribution created by Teapot
 reported on OLPCNews/forum. It's running from a 2GB SD card in my XO-1.
 I installed on it the Sugar Emulator and Sugar Activities packages for
 Ubuntu 8.10, downloaded from Sugarlabs.org. When I launch Browse in that
 environment, it does the same as I reported for Ubuntu 8.04 -- Browse
 start to launch, pulses the Browse icon, then silently quits and the Sugar
 Home page displays again. I ran "top" command during this attempt to see
 if it's a lack of memory space, but there still is 3000 to 12000k of free
 RAM during the launch. When I launch sugar-emulator from the Ubuntu
 terminal, it gives some debug info when the launching starts, but no
 message when it fails and Home is re-displayed.
