Comment:

 You're right, this happens in other activities as well and has been
 reported upstream as [http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19365
 Xephyr bug #19365].
 Unfortunately, the mentioned workaround (passing -kb) causes the keyboard
 not to work at all.
