 I have applied Martin's suggestions to the new diff/patch.
 - Using "~/" seems to be working.
 - ssh isn't using -C so I stuck with -a with -z in the rsync options
 - still looking at the battery script if it can accurately detect desktops
 (w/o battery) vs. laptops (with battery)
