 This is a feature of my Thinkpad, and presumably other laptops.

 When the battery is removed the whole HAL entry is removed, rather than
 just setting 'battery.present = false'. Sugar should handle this
 situation.

 Using a fake battery (HAL commands) I can confirm that the system
 recognises 'battery.present = false' to mark battery as absent.
